The hardcore run where nobody died
In two campaigns with hardcore switched on, the heroes arrived at the same place: 1 HP, three scars each, alive. Between them they had dropped to zero six times. Neither died.
Then came a third campaign where the player was plainly heading for death. “Take on the whole crowd.” “I fight to the last, to the death, they won’t take me alive!!” “I sink my teeth into their throats, captivity is worse than death for me.” “Bite through my own veins.”
He survived that too.
What a defeat is
Zero HP is not death for us, it is a defeat. The hero falls, but the story turns rather than ending: the Master picks an outcome from the scene itself — captivity, a ransom, a rescue at the last moment — and always takes a hard price: a scar that will not heal, a debt, gear. You cannot survive for free. After that the app itself lifts the hero back to 1 HP.
Death is a separate request. The Master can ask for it; the app is what lets it through or refuses. In an ordinary campaign it always refuses. Hardcore is the only mode where the request goes through.
The first guess was wrong
At first we decided the Master simply did not know which mode the campaign was in. And that was true: the hardcore flag sat in the backend and never reached the prompt, and the instructions mentioned it exactly once — “outside hardcore such a request will be refused”. What was left was the general rule: by default, steer towards a defeat. The Master duly followed it.
Fixed: the block of facts the prose is obliged to obey now says outright that the campaign is hardcore and that death is possible here.
It did not help. The hero dropped to zero again — and survived again.
The real reason
The instruction said: ask for death when no plausible rescue is left in the scene.
That condition is impossible to violate. The Master invents the world in which it then looks for a rescue — and always finds one. The healer shouts “Alive! I said alive!”. The noose is loosened so he can be carried. His hands are tied so he cannot reach his veins. Every time it is honest, coherent prose, and every time it is a refusal.
We were asking the model to prove that something does not exist. In a world it is writing as it goes, that cannot be proved.
The decision was taken away from the Master
Now, in hardcore at zero HP, the app asks one question it can answer itself: is there anyone nearby who would pull him out?
A companion in the party, or a person well disposed towards the hero — then it is a defeat as before: a price, a scar, back up to 1 HP. Nobody like that nearby — the hero dies, and that is no longer the Master’s decision.
An important detail: the app looks at the world before the turn. Otherwise the Master could introduce a rescuer in the same reply that lands the fatal blow — and lift the hero out of a death it had just described.
That is how it looks. The line under the name was written by the app, not the Master: since the app made the decision, the app says so plainly rather than inventing a graceful explanation on the model’s behalf.
What we still cannot do
Captivity is still there. It is honest when it is known in advance: slavers have cages, prisoners fetch a price, the pit buys fighters. We built a way to declare such a stake ahead of time — and in seventeen turns the Master never once used it. Not in the fighting pit, not with the pit’s owner standing right there, a woman who literally trades in fighters.
So the mechanism exists, and the game has not yet produced an occasion for it to fire.
And one more thing that surfaced in “The Pit”. The hero there is a prisoner from the very start: he was dragged in in chains, a weapon was pushed into his hand once he was already on the sand, and the owner decides who walks out alive. So the question at zero HP is not “will he be taken prisoner” at all — he already is one. The question is whether he will be spared. That is a different mechanism, and we do not have it yet.
For now the main thing works in hardcore: if there is nobody nearby, the hero dies. Which is exactly what was asked for.
